Vanuatu Petrel is confirmed breeding on Vanua Lava in Vanuatu. It has been treated both as a species and as a subspecies; this entry follows the local catalogue's Pterodroma occulta taxon.
It is about 20% smaller than White-naped Petrel. On the underwing, the primaries beyond the white coverts are dark gray.
Burrows occur in open vegetation on a mountain slope. Adults were found in burrows during the day in February 2009; the observer inferred that they were incubating.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
