The New Guinea Woodcock is a secretive, nocturnal bird of New Guinea's mountains. This account follows sources that treat it as a species distinct from the Javan Woodcock.
The plumage description of Scolopax rosenbergii by Kennedy et al. notes dark-brown upperparts with darker cinnamon-rufous mottling and loose barring, plus conspicuous white malar and supraloral spots.
The species is cryptic and nocturnal. It inhabits dense montane forest and alpine-grassland margins from 1,500 to 3,800 m, mostly above 2,400 m.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
