This monarch flycatcher occurs in forests on Australia's east coast. On Queensland's Gold Coast, local records place it in rainforest and damp eucalypt forest below the canopy.
An older Queensland account, using the genus name Monarcha, describes adults with blue-grey upperparts, a black mask across both eyes, a rufous-orange breast, white belly, and a black tail with white outer tips. Juveniles lack the black facial mask.
The Gold Coast account places the bird well below the canopy in rainforest and damp eucalypt forest, where it favors thick undergrowth.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
