A freshwater seal found only in Lake Baikal, with occasional records in rivers connected to the lake.
Its back is silvery gray and its underside is lighter yellow-gray. Spotted individuals occur, but they are rare.
In winter it may stay alone near a breathing hole and keep the opening clear with its foreclaws. It looks for fish around twilight or at night.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
