The bearded emperor tamarin is a small monkey of the southwestern Amazon. Its tufted white facial hair and rufous rump and tail distinguish the subgrisescens form. The Mammal Diversity Database currently lists it as Saguinus subgrisescens.
The chin bears long white hairs forming a tuft, with moustache-like hair beside the mouth. The 2023 comparison also records brownish chest and belly hair mixed with white, and a rufous rump and tail.
The Smithsonian species account places emperor tamarins in lowland, mountain, and seasonally flooded forests across Peru, Brazil, and Bolivia. It describes a mainly fruit diet supplemented by insects, gum, nectar, and leaves, and notes mixed-species groups with saddleback tamarins.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
