Clara's echymipera is a marsupial of lowland forest in northern New Guinea and Yapen Island. It is described as nocturnal and terrestrial, with dark back fur and sex-related differences in belly color.
The back is dark and unpatterned. The account describes salmon-colored belly fur in males and paler fur in females; not every individual has a white muzzle.
It is mainly nocturnal and terrestrial and builds nests under leaf litter. Figs and Pandanus fruits are the foods recorded in the field; omnivory is suggested rather than established.
