The Spurred Leaf-nosed Bat is a hipposiderid bat of New Guinea and nearby islands. A recent survey recorded it at a higher elevation than previously known.
Its common name is the Spurred Leaf-nosed Bat. The sources reviewed here do not provide a species-specific description of coat color or pattern, so those details are left unspecified.
The Spurred Leaf-nosed Bat (Hipposideros calcaratus) was recorded at 1,092 metres in the Whiteman Range on New Britain, Papua New Guinea. Earlier records extended from sea level to 600 metres, so the new record is 492 metres above the previous upper limit. The Whiteman Range transect covered four sites from 500 to 1,100 metres, spaced 200 metres apart. Forest along the transect was mainly primary rainforest, with some secondary rainforest. Across the survey, Table 1 lists two individuals of this species: one female and one male.
The authors describe this species as an obligate cave dweller and infer from records above 1,000 metres that bat caves are nearby.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
