The Mexican giant shrew is known only from Mexico. A small number of collection records place it along damp streams and in forests with fallen logs and rocks.
Its dorsal fur ranges from light gray to light brown; the ventral hairs have white tips, and the tail is slightly bicolored.
Most reported specimens were captured near moist stream banks with logs, rocks, or boulders. Records also come from humid tropical deciduous forest, montane moist forest, and lava-rock areas.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
