This large tyrant flycatcher has a massive black bill and orange crown feathers that may be raised in display. Its range is restricted to forested parts of Cuba.
The head is blackish, and the orange crown feathers can be hidden. The back and wings are dark grey, while the throat and belly are white. The tail is slightly notched with pale tips. The sexes have similar plumage.
It uses tall lowland forest, especially pine forest and wooded river or swamp edges. In the dry season it also forages in large trees and palms in more open places. It catches flying insects from high exposed perches and also eats fruit and lizards.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
