This antthrush occurs in Costa Rica and Panama. In 2025, checklist authors treated the formerly included populations in Colombia and Ecuador as a separate species. The description here is limited to the Costa Rican and Panamanian bird.
Birds in Costa Rica and Panama have a chestnut hindneck. On some individuals the chestnut extends onto the sides of the neck, forming a partial collar; the back is typically more chestnut-brown as well.
Its song is a rapid sequence of about 25 clear, pulsating whistled notes. These are recordings assigned to nigricapillus in Costa Rica and Panama.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
