This babbler ranges from northeastern India to northern Vietnam. Records in China are from western and southeastern Yunnan, where it searches for insects in forest undergrowth and bamboo thickets.
The head, mantle, and breast are grey; the forecrown is usually brown, with black stripes along the sides of the crown. The throat is whitish with faint streaks, the belly and tail are rufous-brown, and the rufous wings show a white panel.
It forages actively in the undergrowth of broadleaf and conifer forests and in bamboo thickets, feeding mainly on insects. It is usually seen in small flocks.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
