The Greater Flameback is a large woodpecker ranging across South and Southeast Asia. In part of its range, it is strongly associated with mangroves.
Compared with the similar Common Flameback, both sexes have a pale iris, less white on the face, a more pointed crest, a bulkier build, and a white stripe down the center of the hindneck.
In Peninsular Malaysia, the local population is mainly confined to mangroves; elsewhere in its range it also uses forest and forest edge.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
