This small bird is widespread in sub-Saharan Africa and favors woodland, savanna, and riverine thickets over evergreen forest. It searches for insects and spiders in trees and bushes.
About 12–13 cm long, it is distinguished by pure white flanks. The female also has a chestnut breast band and throat patch.
It uses woodland, savanna, and riverine thickets, including Acacia, thornveld, miombo, and mopane habitats. It constantly searches tree and bush canopies, hawking insects and spiders. Evergreen forest is rarely used.
