A tropical monk seal that lives across the Hawaiian Islands.
Adults are grayish brown on the back and paler underneath. Newborn pups have black fur.
Usually solitary, it searches near the seafloor for fish, squid, octopus, eels, and crustaceans. Typical foraging dives average about 6 minutes and are usually shallower than 200 feet. NOAA reports that seals can dive for up to 20 minutes and beyond 1,800 feet.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
