A black-and-white bird with a horn-like structure above its bill.
Most of the body is black, with a broad black band across the white tail. Adults have red eyes in males and whitish eyes in females. Young birds lack the large horn-like structure.
Rhinoceros Hornbills eat fruit, especially figs, and nest in large tree cavities. A male feeds the enclosed female through a narrow opening.
After breeding last succeeded in 2006, Chester reviewed the pair’s environment, diet and interactions. Two chicks were reared in 2019, reported in 2021.
The project also monitored condition and natural behaviour. Nest and development records support shared knowledge for managed breeding, distinct from protecting wild forest.
IUCN Red List (conservation institution account) · Vulnerable · Global
Logging, agricultural conversion and hunting are threats. Large nesting trees matter, while institutions cooperate in managed breeding and knowledge sharing.
