Recorded throughout the year in Britain and Ireland. It is most widespread in the north and west and in uplands during breeding, and across much of the area in winter except the highest ground.
A small bird with brown, streaked plumage. In flight, the outer tail feathers look white.
During breeding it sings while rising, then flutters down in a display flight. In winter it may hide among plants in small flocks and suddenly fly up when disturbed.
