It occurs in forest from southern Kenya through northeastern and eastern Tanzania to Zanzibar. Montane forest in the Usambaras, the inland Nguru foothills and near Mount Kanga supports the nominate lineage.
The 1928 description distinguishes a grayer breast and browner crown from typical Pale-breasted Illadopsis. The type specimen was collected at Amani in the Usambara Mountains in 1926.
It inhabits the forest understory in the Usambara Mountains. A 2021 study included it in long-term mist-net samples from both the East and West Usambaras. Sampling ran in 1987–2016 in the east and 1989–2016 in the west.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
