This small bird ranges through the western Andes of Peru to northwestern Chile. A regional bird account describes pale streaks on the back and rufous streaks on the crown.
Adults have a greyish back marked with fine pale streaks and a rufous, streaked crown.
In montane scrub it moves among fine branches and leaves while searching for small invertebrates.
