A small diving petrel with a black back and white underparts, living along the coasts at South America’s southern tip.
The upperparts are black and the underparts white. Grey mottling occurs on the flanks and sides of the breast, and a white line from above each eye runs down the neck to join the white breast.
It flies low over coastal water with rapid wingbeats and dives using its wings. It takes aquatic invertebrates, especially crustaceans, and small fish; on small coastal islands it digs burrows in soft soil for nesting.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
