The Magellanic Oystercatcher is a large wader found mainly along the coasts of southern South America. During the breeding season it also moves inland to wet grasslands.
The head, neck, breast, and back are black, while the belly is white. The bill is reddish, the eye-ring yellow, and the legs pale pink.
Along the coast it searches mud and rocks for shellfish and crabs. During the breeding season it uses inland wet grasslands and pools, where it also takes earthworms.
It readily associates with other oystercatchers.
In flight, a large white panel shows along the trailing part of the wing.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
