The Malagasy serotine is endemic to Madagascar. A 2006 paper treated it in Neoromicia, while the current Mammal Diversity Database places it in Laephotis. Records span forests and agricultural landscapes in the east.
It is a small bat with dark-brown fur on the back, paler mid-brown fur below and very dark wings.
It has been recorded in eastern Madagascar in relatively intact humid forest, degraded natural forest, secondary forest and agricultural landscapes. The paper describes it as relatively common in human-associated settings in the Central Highlands.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
