The mountain beaver is a rodent distinct from true beavers. It digs burrows in moist forest soils and eats plants.
Its compact, cylindrical body is covered in coarse, dense dark fur. The tail is very short, and a small white spot sits at the base of each ear.
It is mainly nocturnal but may also be active during the day. It stays near its burrow, eats mainly ferns and other plants, and piles up extra vegetation.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
