The Panniet Naked-backed Fruit Bat is a large fruit-eating bat of islands in Papua New Guinea. Its name refers to the apparently bare center of its back.
Its head-and-body length is about 15–20 cm. The head is blackish brown, the back gray-brown, and the underside medium brown. Coarse, erect hairs cover the nape and shoulders. The wings meet along the spine, with fur beneath them, giving the middle of the back its naked-backed appearance.
It is nocturnal and eats fruit. It roosts mainly in tree hollows and limestone caves; small groups use the twilight zone near cave entrances. Pregnant and lactating females have been recorded in the wild.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
