A thrush mainly seen in Japan in winter. It favors dim woodland with undergrowth and forages on the ground.
The central belly is white, and white on the outer tail is visible in flight. Adult males have gray-brown heads; females and young males tend to show less gray.
The paper followed a Pale Thrush wintering in Nagoya and recorded where it roosted and the light levels at which it became active. In January 1969, one female used an area about 100 m by 100 m over four days. She changed her nighttime roost each day, but each roost was among groups of broad-leaved trees.
Her first movement each morning and last movement each evening occurred at similar light levels on each day. Morning movement began at a lower light level than the last movement in the evening. The study records one bird shifting roosts while staying within the same small area, alongside the relationship between daily activity and ambient light. The observation covers one female over four winter days.
