This canary lives in dry scrub and savanna in eastern Africa. It searches for grass seeds near the ground, and some birds move outside the breeding season.
The adult male of the nominate subspecies has a deep yellow head and throat, a dark olive back, and a white lower belly. Its short bill is cone-shaped.
It is usually alone, in pairs, or in small groups and searches near the ground for grass seeds. Outside the breeding season, some birds move and may gather at feeding sites.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
