This rice rat was described from Costa Rica. It was once grouped with another species, but the current Costa Rican list treats it separately. A study published in 2024 reports its capture in a shaded coffee agroecosystem during a survey conducted from March 2019 to February 2022.
The original description reports blackish-brown upper fur finely mixed with bright yellowish-rufous hairs, more rufous along the sides, and a yellowish-brown underside with a grayish cast.
