A dark-brown seabird of the open ocean, with silvery flashes under its wings. It nests on Southern Hemisphere islands and dives to catch fish and other marine prey.

It uses the wind to glide low over the ocean and pursues fish and marine invertebrates underwater. After breeding it migrates far into the Northern Hemisphere.
