The Southern Citril is recorded in Tanzania, Malawi and north-western Mozambique. A survey in Niassa found small groups in mountain habitats, including one larger evening gathering.
The field identification account describes a grey or olive face rather than a black one, with a fine line above the eye.
A survey in Niassa Province recorded the species on Mt Chitagal, Mt Sanga and the Njesi Plateau. Groups were usually about 2–5 birds; about 35 were seen one evening near Mt Sanga.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
