This pitta is endemic to Manus Island, Papua New Guinea. Its glossy black plumage has bright red feathers beneath the tail and pale blue on the upperwing. A 1990 survey observed it calling from forest perches.
Its plumage is glossy black, with bright red undertail-coverts and pale blue upperwing-coverts. The sexes are reported to be similar, though females are described in an earlier source as slightly smaller and less bright.
In the 1990 survey, many birds were located by following their calls, which were heard from elevated forest perches. One bird also approached and called when observers imitated the call.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
