This shrew is recorded in the highlands of eastern Chiapas, Mexico, and western Guatemala. The 2018 account treats it as separate from Sorex veraepacis based on recent morphometric work, although it was often included within that species before.
The back is gray to gray-brown, and the underside is slightly paler. The tail may match the back or be faintly two-toned.
The account records it in pine-oak cloud forest at elevations of 3030–3160 m.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
