Hildegarde’s shrew is recorded from forests and mountains in eastern and central Africa; an Usambara survey found it in the East Usambara but not the West Usambara.
In East Usambara samples, head-and-body length ranged from 60–77 mm in females and 63–81 mm in males.
During a three-year East Usambara study, the species was generally found in forest. The sole capture outside natural forest was near the edge between a tea plantation and herbaceous vegetation.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
