A brightly colored large hummingbird of lowland rainforest in northern Amazonia and the Guianan Shield.
Males measure 21–23 cm in body length and females 13–14 cm, so males are larger. Males have a black head, red back, and long black tail feathers with bright gold near the tail; females have dark green backs and yellow feet.
During breeding, males court with zigzag flights, dives, and shimmering belly feathers. Nectar is the main food outside breeding, while spiders and insects are added during breeding.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
