The Bhutan giant flying squirrel is a large gliding squirrel reported from the eastern Himalaya. It has a deep reddish-brown body and a lighter gliding membrane; its tail tip is often black.
The coat is deep maroon, with a bright yellow line along the back. The gliding membrane is lighter than the body; the chestnut saddle contrasts with golden-yellow, ochre, or orange areas. The tail tip is usually black, and the underside is pale rufous.
In the Himalaya, it is recorded in montane forest at 1,670–3,000 m, including temperate pine and rhododendron woods. It is arboreal and active at dusk and at night. In 2008, one captive animal near Dhap Pokhari in Ilam District, eastern Nepal, was fed rice and maize.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
