The Brazilian guinea pig is a wild guinea-pig relative of South American grasslands and savannas. It feeds mainly on plants and moves under cover in dense vegetation.
Its fur is brown, darker on the back and lighter underneath.
The Brazilian Guinea Pig is widespread in Brazil, but the Bahia portion of the São Francisco River basin had not appeared in the literature reviewed by the author. A 2022 report recorded a group of these rodents in semi-deciduous forest within the Bahian Cerrado.
The author compared the forest at the site with published records and proposed an updated distribution map. The locality lies in the Cerrado portion of the São Francisco basin. This field record added a documented occurrence from a place that had been absent from the literature reviewed for the paper.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
