This woodpecker occurs in forests of western and central Africa. Red on the rear crown is a male trait; females lack it.
The male has a black forehead and front crown, with red on the rear crown and nape. The female has no red on the crown.
It pecks at moss, epiphytes, and branches in dense primary forest and may also use regrowth where large trees remain.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
