This small bird lives in forests from south-eastern Kenya into Tanzania. Males show blue-gray, black, and white markings; females are marked mainly with chestnut.
The male has bluish-gray upperparts, a black facial band and breast band, and a white wing-bar. The female has chestnut upperparts, a white throat, and rufous-chestnut across the breast and flanks.
It uses evergreen and miombo woodland, gleaning small invertebrates from foliage in the mid- and lower canopy. It is seen alone, in pairs, or in small family groups.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
