The male has a blue cap and moustachial stripe, rufous-orange cheeks and belly, and a red bill. The female has a duller cap, green upperparts, and larger buff spots on the wings.
It is difficult to spot in the forest and eats large insects such as grasshoppers and beetles, as well as snails and frogs. It may call before dawn.
