The Maguari Stork lives in South American wetlands. It has contrasting black-and-white plumage and searches for prey while walking through shallow water.
Adults have a white body with black wings and tail. The bill is bluish gray at the base and red toward the tip; bare skin around the eyes and the legs are also red.
Outside the breeding season it is often solitary. It searches by sight, walking through shallow water with its neck extended.
In the north of its range, including the Venezuelan Llanos, it nests in bushes or shrubs. In Brazil and Argentina it mainly nests on the ground in marshes.
After leaving the nest, young birds form groups with other young and continue receiving food from their parents. They also return to the nest at night.
Chicks change from sparse white down to very dark, nearly black down.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
