The gray-bellied caenolestid is a small marsupial with an elongated face and a grayish belly. It lives in cool, wet Andean habitats of central Ecuador and northwestern Peru.
Its face is elongated like that of a shrew, and its back is covered with long, coarse brownish-black fur. The underfur is grayish-white, and dark chest spots may be present.
In ADW's genus-level account, caenolestids are active from evening into night and rest in tunnels under tree roots by day. They travel on the ground and can also climb.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
