The Kerguelen Petrel is a medium-sized, all-dark petrel with a broad range across the Southern Ocean. It nests in deep burrows on islands and feeds mainly on squid.
It is a medium-sized petrel with all-dark plumage, similar in size to the Soft-plumaged Petrel. The account does not describe finer feather patterns.
At breeding sites it digs deep burrows in soft, wet soil. It feeds mostly on squid, along with krill and fish; squid are also caught at the surface at night.
