This longspur breeds in the Arctic and moves to central North American grasslands for winter.
Breeding males are mostly rich caramel with bold black-and-white facial stripes. Females have a less distinct head pattern; nonbreeders and immatures are buffy with fine brown streaks.
It forages on tundra during breeding and in flocks in open grasslands after migration.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
