The Mérida Oryzomys ranges from Colombia's eastern highlands to the Mérida Andes of Venezuela. Its tail is longer than its head and body, and records come from forested slopes at 1,100–4,000 m.
The tail is longer than the head and body, and the back is covered with dense, long fur.
At Páramo de Tamá, specimens were collected in cool, densely forested sites, in ground litter and under logs and roots. The 2015 book provisionally includes these border-area specimens in this species, so their taxonomic placement may be revised.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
