A thrush commonly seen in British gardens and parks. It searches ground litter for worms, insects and fruit.
Males have black feathers, yellow bills and yellow eye-rings. Females are mainly dark brown with mottling on the breast and other areas.
In the Rammert forest near Rottenburg, southwest Germany, researchers deployed 21 camera traps from January 2021 to January 2022 and recorded 499 blackbird events. After adjusting times for seasonal daylight, they found one daily activity peak in spring and two in each other season.
Males were active earlier than females in spring; both sexes were most active before noon in summer. In autumn, males peaked in the morning and evening while females peaked around noon; both sexes were more active in the afternoon in winter. The authors suggested the spring pattern may relate to breeding and territorial behavior. Male and female activity overlapped greatly overall, although peak number and timing varied by season.
