It belongs to the dog family and has a dark mask around the eyes and a pale muzzle. It searches for a wide range of animal and plant foods in wooded cover near forests and water.
It has short legs and a stocky body, a pale muzzle and face, and dark fur around the eyes. A dark marking also extends from the shoulders along the back.
It forages on the ground and low vegetation, eating insects and small animals as well as fish and fruit. It may also enter or dive into water while searching for food.
