This mole occurs in the central and western Balkans and northern Greece. It lives almost entirely underground, digging tunnels through soil.
It is 10–15 cm in size and has unusually large, shovel-shaped forefeet for digging. Its very small eyes are covered by skin but can distinguish light from dark.
It digs tunnels underground and feeds mainly on earthworms. Mounds of excavated soil can mark its presence at the surface.
