This Andean tanager occurs in the humid upper Yungas forests of Bolivia. It has been recorded moving in small flocks.
It is a large tanager with a black hood, blue nape and red iris. The account notes a narrower blue-violet nape band in the western La Paz subspecies.
It inhabits humid to wet upper Yungas cloud and elfin forest. It usually forages in the canopy and subcanopy, often in small or mixed-species flocks, and may descend at forest edges.
