A South Asian squirrel that searches for food both in trees and on the ground.
It usually has three pale stripes along its back. Its coat ranges from gray-brown to nearly black, while the head can be gray to reddish brown.
It is active by day and spends much of its time in trees, though it also forages on the ground. It eats seeds, nuts, buds, leaves, and insects, and may store food.
