A small rodent of cold mountains and tundra from Norway toward the Kola Peninsula.
It has a thick, rounded body with black and brown fur streaked with gold. The underside is lighter, and the tail is barely noticeable.
In snowy seasons it shelters in spaces beneath the snow; when snow cover is absent, it uses moist habitats and shallow burrows. It is active by day and night and usually lives alone.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
