This thrush is endemic to Taiwan. It breeds in montane forest at about 1,000–2,500 m and may descend to foothills and lowlands in winter.
The male is black with an orange belly and a snow-white head. The female is browner, with a brown-and-white mottled head.
Males sing from the canopy. In winter, the species may descend into foothills and lowlands and mix with other thrushes.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
