The montane Hylomyscus lives in forest and high-elevation vegetation in the Ruwenzori Mountains. Adult specimens have tails longer than their head-and-body length; the 2006 review separated it from other forms once grouped under the same name.
In adult specimens from the Ugandan Ruwenzori sample, the tail was longer than the head-and-body length.
Above 2,100 m on the Ugandan side, it was more often recorded in Podocarpus forest, bamboo, tree heath, mossy forest, and alpine vegetation.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
